English (PL) football games over the next week or so
|
Any thoughts, guesses how this will pan out? I would think this weekend's PL game will be off, even when Diana died the next round of games were postponed.
The official mourning period is 10 days, assuming that starts today, it ends next Sunday. IF they strictly abide by that maybe they could have a full fixture list on the Monday night as there are no European games that midweek, but what about the TV deals, etc.
The following weekend is an international break, so no way are three weekends of games being postponed.

Understand the funeral will be after 10 days (today is day 1) so that that will be on Monday 19th and a public holiday. I suspect they may postpone this weekend and play next but personally the Friday postponements are enough and this weekend should go ahead with pre-match tributes by each club.

I hope so, if games are on this weekend then you'd think there will be a statement of some kind soon.

Kick in the bollocks for people who’ve spent hundreds to get to a game, especially in a cost of living crisis. Games should go ahead, if people don’t want to attend because they’re “numb” and mourning then fair enough. But if others do then let them.

That's not how national mourning works over here, though.
It's not like this happens all the time, or anything.

You can imagine lots of Newcastle fans will have booked trains to come down on Saturday and have a hotel booked after a night out in London before the game on Sunday.

Cancel tonight's games and reschedule for Saturday. Two minutes silence at weekend matches. Job done. I can't see any reason to be cancelling matches. The queen is dead - long live the king - life goes respectfully on.
And I say all that as a very strong monarchist.
Liverpool fans will find something to get upset about, no doubt, the fellow-supporter killing, traitorous, thieving, self-righteous cunts.

The UK government told football leagues that this weekend's fixture can go ahead but has left the decision up to the governing bodies.
The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport held a call with all major sports at 9.30am to determine the plan of action for the rest of this weekend's calendar.
It remains to be seen what the Premier League, English Football League and Football Association will decide to do.

What would cancelling games achieve other than creating a backlog of games and people losing money from already buying tickets, booking transport etc?
Most people are going to be sad about the news but still want to get on with their lives and that includes going to watch football.
Cancelling games for a “period of mourning” isn’t going to make much difference. People still have to go to work, go out to get shopping etc so why should attending football be any different.
Get the games on and do a mark of silence so people can pay their respects at the match.
Just hope the Celtic & Liverpool supporters don’t fucking ruin it.

As said, if you cancel games then that’s people s enjoyment, so to be fair you should cancel work also. The majority of people will be saying “ what a shame” “ great women” etc, now I need to get on with my life. Only be the establishment that will be really going overboard because they have everything on a plate anyhow.

The Queen's whole life was about the very British stiff upper lip and keeping on going in adversity.
Cancelling football matches as a result of her dying would be ridiculous in my opinion. I don't care either way if they go ahead or not but it would just seem unnecessary. A minute's silence and other marks of respect would seem much more appropriate.

I understand it Trunds - but its massively outdated.
I'm sure Lizzie would want people to enjoy life and do things that make them happy........... like going to football. Days of nothing happening is just boring and depressing. She was all about modernization.
People can still pay their respects.

What is the point of cancelling games, wasn't the Queen all about no fuss, get on with it!
I'm also sick of James Blunt and Adele being played on the radio!
